The three main toxins you’ll most likely encounter when looking to get rid of facial wrinkles are BOTOX®, Dysport® and XEOMIN® . As we often explain to our Bay Area patients, all 3 of the neuromodulators work the same way by temporarily blocking the nerves of facial muscles that create wrinkles.
Are All Neuromodulators the Same?
BOTOX (Allergan), Dysport (Galderma) and XEOMIN (Merz) all have the same active ingredient—botulinum toxin—but each brand has a slightly different formulation. Generally, most practitioners use all 3 to treat fine lines and wrinkles on the brow, forehead, crow’s feet, bunny lines, frown lines, and nasal squint lines.

Neuromodulator Cheat Sheet
What Are the Main Benefits of BOTOX?
BOTOX was the first neuromodulator on the market and has the best name recognition. This isn’t necessarily an important quality when looking to get rid of wrinkles, but since BOTOX has been around the longest, it has also been studied the most too. And if you go to a small practice, BOTOX may be your only option for a wrinkle treatment.
You can see the type of results we can achieve with BOTOX by browsing our patients’ before-and-after photos.
What Are the Main Benefits of Dysport?
For one, the results of Dysport appear in about half the time as BOTOX and XEOMIN. But also, Dysport has a smaller molecule size, so it moves quicker and spreads out over a larger area. In some parts of the face, such as the forehead or crow’s feet where most people want a broad, even distribution, Dysport can be the better option.
What Are the Main Benefits of XEOMIN?
The main benefit of XEOMIN is that it is “naked,” meaning that it contains just one ingredient. There are no additives or preservatives, which is usually the component of toxins that people react adversely to. So, if you haven’t tolerated BOTOX or Dysport well in the past, XEOMIN may be your go-to neuromodulator.
In Conclusion – BOTOX, Dysport& XEOMIN
If you only take one thing away from this article, it should be this—the person injecting your neuromodulator is far more important than which brand you choose. Always see a board-certified provider and make sure to ask lots of questions.
