Every so often, the FDA approves a more advanced hyaluronic acid filler which adds to the cadre of dermal fillers we have available to smooth, plump or fill aging facial features. Each filler has a slightly different texture, density and flexibility making each more appropriate for various areas of the face.
The newest FDA-approved fillers – Restylane Refyne and Restylane Defyne – just hit the market and were designed to fill the nasolabial folds, laugh lines around the mouth, with greater flexibility than anything previously available. Unlike the fillers for this area, Refyne and Defyne, have the ability to move along with your facial expressions so you never look stiff or over-filled.
What Makes Refyne & Defyne Different?
The primary ingredient in Refyne and Defyne is the same naturally occurring substance in most dermal fillers, hyaluronic acid, but Refyne and Defyne also contain a cross-linking cohesive gel which helps the HA flex with the muscles of your face. This XpresHAn Technology allows for more natural facial expressions while still providing volume to the deeper lines and creases.
Both Restylane Refyne and Defyne have been used in Europe under the name Emervel since 2010. Galderma, the parent company which produces all Restylane® products in the U.S., claims both of these fillers last up to 12 months, which means you’ll need to see Drs. Lieberman & Parikh twice a year to maintain results.
Is Defyne or Refyne Right For Me?
Which product is appropriate for you? Well, it depends on the depth of the lines and wrinkles that need to be treated. Sometimes a combination of both fillers may be appropriate.
Refyne is a smoother and softer substance that is more stretchy so it works well on the shallow layers of the face. It was FDA-approved to treat the superficial lines, wrinkles and folds around the mouth.
Defyne is a thicker substance that was designed to affect the deeper layers of the face. While it is also flexible, Defyne also volumizes the deeper smile lines.
